Steptoe introduced historic designs of cast iron spiral and straight staircases to the market in the mid-1970s and is well known for fabricating these models and marketing them around the world. The dramatic staircases are evocative of times gone by and yet, are ideally suited to contemporary décor.

Steptoe staircases offer superb styling with ease of installation. These elegant staircases are suitable for both interior and exterior use.

The Albany, Barclay and Kensington models grace hundreds of fine homes, restaurants, offices, shops and public buildings across North America and abroad. Steptoe spiral staircases have also found their way into the homes of numerous celebrities and onto the sets of dozens of films, television shows and theatrical productions.

All staircases are available in satin black powder coat finish and are zinc primed. Optional finishes are available for an additional charge.

Complete assembly instructions and all hardware are provided with each staircase kit.

Steptoe consults with architects, designers, developers and contractors to determine project requirements. Your drawings and suggestions are always welcome.

The Albany

The 4' diameter Albany, introduced in 1976, is adapted from a design that first appeared in England around 1870. So popular is the Albany design that this model is now also offered in a 5' diameter, providing 50% more tread surface than the original 4' Albany. Primarily designed for use as a secondary stair and an ideal solution where space is at a premium, the Albany is an excellent way to access lofts, balconies, attics, decks or a wall of bookshelves. The open fretwork tread design makes the Albany particularly suitable for exterior installation, as snow and rain do not collect on the surface.

SPECIFICATIONS

Diameter: 4' (1220 mm) and 5'(1524 mm) clockwise or counter-clockwise ascending.

Stair rise: 8" (203 mm).

Weight: 45 lbs. (20.5 kgs.) for 4' diameter, and 80 lbs. (36.29 kgs.) for the 5' diameter, per complete riser (includes Georgian baluster, tread, pole and handrail).

Rotation: Each tread = 27.69 degrees; 13 treads = 360 degrees.

Baluster height: 38.5" (978 mm).

Handrail: 1.5" (38 mm) diameter black steel tube is standard. Brass or polished chrome tubular handrails are optional. End scroll is included.

PLANNING NOTES

The Albany spiral staircase is available in both clockwise and counter-clockwise ascending directions. There are 13 treads to the circle (360 degrees). This means that an average flight (13 risers/treads) rotates a full circle. Each rise is 8” (203 mm). Stair elevations may be adjusted in our shop by reducing or adding to each riser as needed. There is a small charge for this service. To determine the correct number of complete risers required, simply divide your elevation by 8" (203 mm). Each riser comes equipped to accommodate one Georgian Baluster.

Landing notes: The landing plate and the top tread must form a square platform when bolted together (see diagram). The minimum size of the 4' Albany landing is 25" x 25" (635 mm x 635 mm); for the 5' Albany it is 31.5” x 31.5” (800 mm x 800 mm). The thickness of the landing plate should not be greater than 2" to allow for sufficient headroom.

OPTIONAL PARTS

A selection of stock and custom components is available to complete and customize the Albany installation.

Landings: Custom cast aluminum or steel plate landings can be made to each job's specifications. Whatever shape the stairwell may be, Steptoe's shop can create the necessary landing. Two patterns are available: the checker plate surface and thedecorative surface. Alternatively, a local carpenter or metal fabricator can prepare the landing from a wide range of materials.

Angle collar: This small brass attachment connects the straight handrail to the brass finial ball supplied with the staircase.

Extension railings: Straight lengths of tube (steel, brass or polished chrome) are sold, per foot, to be used as handrails.

Georgian balusters: A. 38.5" (978 mm) B. 41.375" (1050 mm) C. 42.5" (1080 mm) D. 44" (1118 mm). All measurements are to the top of a 1.5” diameter tubular handrail.

Well ring: Large circular rail to follow the line of the circular well. One leg attaches to finial ball.

The Barclay

The 5' diameter Barclay was designed by Steptoe in 1981 and modeled after a mid-19th century staircase salvaged from a paper mill in the Ottawa Valley. The solid tread surface of the Barclay has a deeply embossed pattern that imitates the design of the riser. With 50% more tread surface than the 4' Albany, the Barclay is the leading choice if space affords.

SPECIFICATIONS

Diameter: 5'(1524 mm) clockwise ascending.

Stair rise: 8.125" (206 mm).

Weight: 85 lbs. (38.6 kgs.) per complete riser (includes Georgian baluster, pole, handrail, tread, riser and side panel).

Rotation: Each tread = 27.69 degrees; 13 treads = 360 degrees.

Steel shims are provided, at no cost, to easily raise the elevation of the overall staircase if required. Alternatively, each riser may be machined down to reduce this height.
