The Albany

The 4' diameter Albany, introduced in 1976, is adapted from a design that first appeared in England around 1870. So popular is the Albany design that this model is now also offered in a 5' diameter, providing 50% more tread surface than the original 4' Albany. Primarily designed for use as a secondary stair and an ideal solution where space is at a premium, the Albany is an excellent way to access lofts, balconies, attics, decks or a wall of bookshelves. The open fretwork tread design makes the Albany particularly suitable for exterior installation, as snow and rain do not collect on the surface.

PLANNING NOTES

The Albany spiral staircase is available in both clockwise and counter-clockwise ascending directions. There are 13 treads to the circle (360 degrees). This means that an average flight (13 risers/treads) rotates a full circle. Each rise is 8” (203 mm). Stair elevations may be adjusted in our shop by reducing or adding to each riser as needed. There is a small charge for this service. To determine the correct number of complete risers required, simply divide your elevation by 8" (203 mm). Each riser comes equipped to accommodate one Georgian Baluster.

Landing notes: The landing plate and the top tread must form a square platform when bolted together (see diagram). The minimum size of the 4' Albany landing is 25" x 25" (635 mm x 635 mm); for the 5' Albany it is 31.5” x 31.5” (800 mm x 800 mm). The thickness of the landing plate should not be greater than 2" to allow for sufficient headroom.
