The company name, Steptoe & Wife, was adapted from the British sitcom,
Steptoe & Son about a Cockney junk dealer. It was the show on which the
US series, Sanford & Son was based.
While most of the stock items manufactured and marketed by Steptoe are rooted
in historical design the company also does custom metal fabrication based on
contemporary and modern designs.
Historic restorations are a specialty. Steptoe has worked on Toronto’s Canon
Theatre (previously the Pantages Theatre), Elgin & Wintergarden Theatre Centre,
Royal York Hotel, CIBC Private Banking Hall, BCE Place, and Lansdowne Bridge.
Also, New York’s Ford Center, Chicago’s Oriental Theatre, Hamilton’s Ontario
Court House, and many more.
Other notable Canadian projects include Kew Gardens bandstand in the Toronto
Beaches area, Museum of Civilization and the Embassy of South Africa in Ottawa.
Other notable US projects include National First Ladies’ Library, Canton, OH.
The Market Place Square, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Jekyll & Hyde nightclub, New York, NY. Queen’s Row Townhomes, Alexandria, VA.
Oakland Chapel, Alcorn State University, MS. California State University, Chico, CA.
More than 60% of Steptoe’s business is outside of Canada, with products and
projects reaching across the globe. In addition to the United States (our largest
trading partner) our goods are regularly shipped as far away as Australia,
Japan, Singapore, Holland, the Middle East, Great Britain and Norway.
Steptoe spiral staircases have been purchased by hundreds of discerning
customers including many celebrities. They are frequently used in films (e.g. the
musical, “Chicago”), TV shows, plays and commercials. |
